Media Non-event of 6/26/2006
by Captain May
An important story was buried by the mainstream media last week: the 6/26 Senate Democrats hearing on Pre-Iraq War Intelligence. I offer this analysis of the media non-coverage of that damning (ergo, ignored) event. I hope you find it both enjoyable and informative -- and lament that no one else has done this bit of writing yet! Your servant, CPTMAY
I recall quite clearly that the corporate media folks who helped to sell the war lies were quite alarmed as they stood outside those doors, wondering what lies to tell the public -- or whether it wasn't too late to tell lies at all. Much more a pack of PR hacks than journalists, they wore "We're busted!" expressions as they waited for the awful reality of Congressional oversight to break forth from the sealed Senate chamber. Having so well kept the public in a state of ignorance, they were rightly afraid of the effect the revelation of the systematic manipulation of media would have. They realized how hard a sell it would be to say that they were King George's embedded media, but didn't really mean to get into bed with the "unitary executive."
The imperial presidency crushed --The Supreme Court's rejection of kangaroo military tribunals shackles Bush's legacy to Nixon's -- and could even land him in the dock for war crimes. By Sidney Blumenthal 06 Jul 2006 "The Supreme Court ruling in the case of Hamdan v. Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense, et al., on June 29 did far more than settle the limited question of whether alleged terrorist detainees can be tried before secret military tribunals. By declaring Bush's position unconstitutional, the court in effect judged his concept of his presidency and his methods in his 'global war on terror' illegitimate. In his majority opinion, Justice John Paul Stevens' strategic capitalization emphasized the larger point: 'The Executive,' he wrote, 'is bound to comply with the Rule of Law.'"
With only a letter, FBI can gather private data 06 Jul 2006 National Security Letters are the key to the trove of personal data. The Patriot Act, passed six weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, expanded the letters' reach. Now they can be issued if a local FBI official merely certifies that the information sought is "relevant" to an international terrorism or foreign intelligence investigation. According to U.S. Justice Department figures, the FBI served 9,254 National Security Letters concerning 3,501 individuals in 2005.
Minister calls for urgent reinforcement in Afghanistan 06 Jul 2006 Defence secretary Des Browne announced today that more British troops could be sent to southern Afghanistan, as a British soldier killed yesterday by Taliban fighters was named for the first time. Mr Browne told parliament that the government was considering sending in fresh forces "as a matter of urgency".,,1814354,00.html
A Regime of Injustice
This is Jim Hightower saying.... By suspending the rule of law, the Bushites have become a regime of injustice. Remember, this is being done in our name - in the name of America
Impeachment groundswell is growing
A resolution to impeach President George W. Bush is pending before the Illinois legislature. Similar resolutions await action in the Vermont and California state legislatures.
Such strong coast-to-coast support for a homeland regime change is really not surprising nor shocking. The evidence is overwhelming. A recent article in Rolling Stone magazine by Robert Kennedy Jr. clearly shows the 2004 election was stolen in Ohio. Besides his general and perhaps purposeful incompetence leading up to the mysterious 9/11 attacks, George W. Bush lied about Weapons of Mass Destruction to lead the country into war in Iraq. While classifying more information as “Secret” than any previous administration, Bush continues today to run illegal wiretaps, approve torture, ignore the Geneva Convention, operate secret prisons overseas, assert military tribunals (recently struck down by the Supreme Court) and violate the separation of powers doctrine by using signing statements to pick and choose congressional legislation.
How our governments use terrorism to control us
By Tim Howells
The studies are complementary. NATO's Secret Armies, Operation Gladio and Terrorism in Western Europe by Daniele Ganser concerns terrorism sponsored by American and British intelligence in Western Europe and Turkey between the end of World War II and 1985. The War on Truth, 9/11, Disinformation, and the Anatomy of Terrorism by Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed chronicles the cultivation and sponsorship of militant Islamic terrorism by the intelligence services of the United States, Britain and Russia from 1979 to the present. Both studies are models of scholarship -- meticulously documented and carefully reasoned -- but the world they reveal will boggle the mind of the most wild-eyed conspiracy theorist.
Fruit of the Poison Tree
The fault lies in the unfounded belief that the poison tree can somehow bear edible fruit. We lobby for our candidate in the naïve belief that if only the other party can get into office things will improve. During the two plus centuries of the American experiment this has occurred many times. Yet the policy decisions have preserved a remarkable homogeneity down through the years. The policies enacted by both the Democrats and the Republicans have almost always disproportionately benefited the wealthy. They have led us into armed conflicts around the world that have resulted in the death of millions of people in war after war. That is because we are living with Plutocratic rule, in which wealth, not We The People, holds sway and determines governmental policy.

CNN Show Host Lou Dobbs brings us a segment on the Bush adminstration's traitorous set-up of the North American Union.
Man Raided By FBI, ATF, Canadian Law Enforcement After Handing Out 'Subversive' Alex Jones Material
A Dillon Montana man had his home raided by 40 FBI, BATF and Canadian law enforcement agents after handing out Alex Jones' material to his local Sheriff which was subsequently deemed 'subversive'.
I read the search warrant and low and behold there's no signed affidavit," said Celata.
Celata told the Sheriff that the search warrant was therefore void to which the FBI and BATF responded that the affidavit was secret and sealed by the court.
"Now they can make up the affidavit to match what they found if they want to," said Celata as he was told that the agents would carry out the search anyway.
Celata was then escorted by an estimated 40 FBI, ATF and Canadian law enforcement agents to his property. Celata asked if he could call his wife so as to enable her and their two small children to leave the property before the SWAT team arrived but was refused on the grounds that he was giving her a secret code to destroy evidence.
The US Federal Reserve Bank: Dirty Secrets of the Temple
It almost happened 43 years ago when one president decided to act on behalf of the people who elected him. That man was John Kennedy, who before his death planned to end the Federal Reserve System to eliminate the national debt a central bank creates by printing money and loaning it to the government. That debt has now risen to over $8,400,000,000,000 ($8.4 trillion) which every taxpayer must pay for and has done so in the amount of nearly $174,000,000,000 ($174 billion) in just the first three months of 2006. This debt service is now an annualized amount exceeding two-thirds of a trillion dollars. It's made the bankers rich (which was the whole idea) and the public poorer because we're taxed to pay the tab. It's no exaggeration to call this the greatest financial scam in world history and one that gets greater every day.
US urged to close Guantanamo Bay prison 06 Jul 2006 Five United Nations human rights experts on Thursday called on international agencies and UN member states to assist the US in closing the Guantanamo Bay detention centre as soon as possible.
Europe's response to the siege of Gaza is shameful
The Palestinians kill two soldiers and take one prisoner and, in response, power stations are blown up, sewage and water systems grind to a halt, bridges are destroyed, sonic booms terrify children day and night, and all this is inflicted on a hungry people who are under siege in what is effectively a huge open prison. The EU's response? Vague expressions of "concern" and calls for "restraint.
The Destabilization Game
In the wake of the collapse of the Soviet empire, the United States was the sole military power of significance left standing. It had, as they saw it, enough excess power to ensure a Pax Americana into the distant future, in part by ensuring that no future or resurgent superpower or bloc of powers would, in any foreseeable future, arise to challenge the United States. As the President put it in an address at West Point in 2002, "America has, and intends to keep, military strengths beyond challenge."
UN speaks out on Israeli action
The special session on Wednesday and Thursday was called by the Arab Group in the UN and supported by about a dozen other member states, including China, India, Russia and South Africa.
Take a Stand by Signing the Voters Pledge! : "I will not vote for or support any candidate for Congress or President who does not make a speedy end to the war in Iraq, and preventing any future war of aggression, a public position in his or her campaign."
Senators Kyl and Graham's Hamdan v. Rumsfeld Scam: The Deceptive Amicus Brief They Filed in the Guantanamo Detainee Case. Senators Graham and Kyl not only misled their Senate colleagues, but also shamed their high offices by trying to deliberately mislead the U.S. Supreme Court. Their effort failed. I have not seen so blatant a ploy, or abuse of power, since Nixon's reign.
Seeing isn't believing
A year on from 7/7, wild rumours are circulating about who planted the bombs and why. Some people even claim this picture of the four bombers was faked. Mark Honigsbaum, who accidentally triggered at least one of the conspiracy theories, investigates,,1806794,00.html
Fascism: An American reality
Whether or not one chooses to define this increasingly all-encompassing suppression of people in America as authoritarian, totalitarian or fascist is a ridiculously moot point for the overwhelming majority of people who have lost or are losing their already limited freedoms, their livelihoods and their very lives to the organized repression of this hypocritical, cynically racist and genocidal American state apparatus. The organized and sustained political, economic, social and cultural repression being waged by the American state against its own citizens and persons globally is nothing short of fascism.
Big Brother Bell
The Bell clause, which took effect June 15, advised subscribers that the company retains the right to "monitor or investigate content or your use of your service provider's networks and to disclose any information necessary to satisfy any laws, regulations or other governmental request."
Few doubt that ISPs already monitor network usage and will disclose subscriber information, including usage habits, if required to do so under a court order. The new clause raised fears, however, that Bell was extending that scrutiny to the active monitoring of user content as well as escalating its willingness to disclose subscriber information without prior judicial oversight.
Go to Venezuela, You Idiot!
I don't usually take the advice of rightwingers. But I did this time. After receiving inflamed email messages from dozens of angry rightists that I should get the hell out of the USA and go to Venezuela, I accepted their challenge and flew to Caracas.
