British, U.S. lied about justification for pre-war Iraq airstrikes

By Michael Smith

Special to RAW STORY. Michael Smith writes for the London Sunday Times. He broke the Downing Street Memo story.

Britain and America’s reasons for stepping up bombing of Iraq in the ten months leading up to the war in Iraq was a sham, official figures released by the British Ministry of Defense show.

U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, and Geoff Hoon, his UK counterpart, said the stepped-up attacks by U.S. and Royal Air Force aircraft patrolling the southern no-fly zone were a response to increased attacks by Iraqi air defences.

The minutes of a meeting of Tony Blair’s Iraq war cabinet on July 23, 2003, leaked to the London Sunday Times, record Hoon as saying “the US had begun spikes of activity to put pressure on the regime.

They are literally 'getting away with murder'. I feel great sadness for all those swept into the violence of this illegal war. There were options, the inspectors were doing their job and I do not believe for a minute that it would have ended with Saddam Hussein being given a 'clean bill of health' to continue to rule Iraq as he wished, the pressure was on. For all the veterans who have spoken up, those from the Vietnam war and the two wars in Iraq, they deserve our love and respect, we owe them a debt of gratitude, equally all the families who have had to face the pain of loss of a loved one or see them return badly injured, faced with tragedy they have given voice to the truth we all know, this was a war of choice, a handful of individuals decided for the rest of us and said and did anything and everything to ensure that at a given hour, on a day of their choosing the bombs would start to fall. Bush and Blair's teams talked incessantly about evil, about how evil lies and cheats to weaken good's resolve. Our world became black and white. Today I heard the voice of a survivor from Hiroshima, he ended his statement with the words 'no more war'. I want to live in the world he longs for, that moment in time when one more death through war is too much to bear, when the voices of the dead from the carnage of past wars are finally heard. Our societies, by whatever name we call them, have spent fortunes on perfecting endless ways of torturing and killing, the 'war on terror' by now is lost, humanity lost it years ago, we are the terror, headlines appear to inspire fear and hate, get us ready for 'shock and awe' and our young men and women are sent of to deliver our message, we will do whatever it takes to win. To get the 'bad' amongst us, we are ready to sacrifice countless innocents. I don't want to see pictures of Saddam in custody, too many dead people stand behind him, his dead, our dead - that price that is paid for in blood and shattered bone. Tony Blair seems to have managed to 'move on' from Iraq, certainly there seems to be no threat to his career prospects, we are told his great oratory skills are winning back public support. I have one message for him, whatever faith we hold to, I believe there is a 'sound', an energy frequency that is 'God's'. The sound is present in Christian, Jewish, Moslem, Hindu, Sikh and Buddhist prayers. It is that energy that equates love of truth with a moving closer to God. That all seeing, all knowing energy invites us to open our hearts to the truth about ourselves, each other. It reminds us that integrity is the root of compassion - that's why many soldiers can be so brutally honest about what they've done, what they've seen going on. People are praying for them, praying for the civilians in Iraq, reaching for the truth about this conflict and I don't believe there's one 'spin doctor' on this planet that can stop us getting to it because we want to save lives. When George Bush talks about evil, then I will say if there is such evil then the plus side is, all things being equal, great good exists - I hope the American people give you a taste of it very soon.

There was no legitimate reason for this war. NONE. It was an illegal and unnecessary war and the Bush Administration must be held accountable. As horrible as Saddam was he understood the US would unseat him if they came in and he did everything he could to prevent that from happening. The Bush Administration went in anyway. And look where we are now. Bush and his group are war criminals. I don't know how else to look at it. I never thought it would come to this in my country.

Robin Cook, who resigned from Blair's cabinet in protest against the war in Iraq, dead at the age of 59.

One a the very few people in politics with principles. A great loss for Great Britain and the World.

Brittish PM does prefer vacation over paying respect to his former

Tony Blair had plenty to do with the Downing Street Iraq discussions.

Robin Hood, his polital Labor Party friend and collegue for many years resigned as reaction to Blair's actions and choices.

Now Blair prefers to remain on vacation over going to Robin Cooks funeral, whithout a doubt being much more than a Labor event.

What a SHAME for a socalled EUropean leader and former Social Democrat!
