An Open Letter to Teresa Heinz

By Steve Cobble
Huffington Post

Ms. Heinz, let me be blunt. It's time for justice.

I'm going to suggest an idea that Bush/Cheney/Rove will hate. That alone should make this post worth reading, shouldn't it?

One year ago tomorrow, August 5th, the sleazy Swift Boat crowd ran their first attack ad on your husband.

Without benefit of fact or first-hand knowledge, and despite the protests of the men who actually served on John Kerry's boat, these sleazeballs took one of the proudest moments of your husband's life and turned it into a smear, a negative, a lie.

That, of course, was their goal. They were running point for the White House, the lead blockers, the mudslingers hoping that if they threw enough pond scum around, something would stick. It worked.

Bush/Cheney gained ground. Kerry/Edwards dropped. That one ad may well have won the election, distortions, lies, and all.

It was one of the lowest moments in American politics. And the elite media, the gatekeepers, just sat and watched, as if it were all just entertainment, a big show, a staged wrestling match between the Rock and Jesse Ventura.

Which means if you want justice, you're going to have to do it yourself.

I know what I would do if my spouse was lied about and smeared. I'd spend part of my vast fortune fighting back. And while my vast fortune is not quite in the same league (same universe!) as yours, doesn't that actually make it even more reasonable a suggestion? (Granted, it's totally unfair that I, who don't even know you, make any comment at all--but that doesn't make this a bad idea.)

After all, 10% of your fortune would buy a huge ad campaign; yet it still leaves you with a decent reserve.

So here's my idea. Take $100M and run the biggest newspaper/radio/TV ad campaign anyone has ever seen. Focus it on all the lies that took us to war. Focus it on the lies highlighted in the 7/23/02 Downing Street Minutes, which most Americans have never seen, because our media elites have never told them the story on the front pages or in the nightly news.

You could run newspaper ads with the key phrases highlighted:

**"The Attorney General said that the desire for regime change was not a legal base for military action."

**"...the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy."

**"There was little discussion in Washington of the aftermath after military action."

**"The Defence Secretary said that the US had already begun 'spikes of activity' to put pressure on the regime."

**"But the case was thin. Saddam was not threatening his neighbours, and his WMD capability was less than that of Libya, North Korea or Iran."

**"secret and strictly personal--UK eyes only"

**"This record is extremely sensitive. No further copies should be made. It should be shown only to those with a genuine need to know its contents."

That would be us, the American people. We had a genuine need to know, but it was never shown to us.

You could change that, Ms. Heinz. If you're at all interested, go to our web site, www.afterdowningstreet.org , and take a look. There's a lot of good stuff there, documents, testimony, investigative journalism from the U.K.--but hardly any of it has been laid out for Americans to see, except on the internet.

You could take it to the papers, the radio, the TV. In a big way.

Bush would hate it. Cheney would hate it. That whole Swift Boat crowd who smeared your husband would hate it.

Start it all later this month, in honor of the one-year anniversary of the Swift Boat sleazeballs. When they ask why you're doing it, just smile and tell them to ask the chicken hawks in the White House.

Call it justice. And remember, it's best served cold.

This is a grand idea! And it would work. Time to smear those crap-bags with their own slime.
Do it. Show them what the power of a woman can wield!!
Go Teresa!!!

From another "Woman'

Too late, the Kerry's have already folded up, rolled over, and are playing dead. NO SPINE there.

Oh please, I can tell you sit at your keyboard and just spewl with no facts to back up your ridiculous opinion. John Kerry and Teresa have been very busy, do your homework before you spit out trash.

To the writer of this post, for your information, the Swifies hit way before August, in fact I think it was back in March, and Kerry came out, he was on GMA, to respond to them, and Charlie Gibson, instead of letting the Senator talk, jumped in and was down right disgusting, not letting Kerry finish a sentence. I wrote Gibson and A an e-mail and have not watched GMA again. Also John Kerry never backed down from saying they were a bunch of crooks and liars, they included the Swift Boat LIARS, he never backed down from that statement.

Also please address Teresa as Teresa Heinz Kerry, yes she still goes by that name, and I have her letter head to prove it. She is MRS. TERESA HEINZ KERRY.

There must be a difference between the gross physical courage required by armed conflict and the quiet, steadfast dedication required in order to stand up for what is right and true. I don't see many wealthy Americans of any ilk having those qualities. I'm a member of the Veterans for Peace and spent eight years in the Marine Corps. We, the VFP have called for impeachment twice already and it hasn't happened yet. I tell my compatriots that if we had the budget the Pentagon has Bush & Co. would already be doing time in Leavenworth. If our "Leaders", particularly the Democatic leaders had the same gumption the VFP has we would never have reached this sorry state.

Don't wait for your "leaders", don't wait for the people who have benefited the most from America to do anything. They haven't and I don't believe they will. Get your own self out there: agitate, talk-up, work hard. If you don't do it now--for yourself--you'll be doing it later in some gulag for the state and the ones who had the resources and didn't do a damn thing.

RAISE CAIN BEFORE 30 AUGUST--TELL EVERYONE (AND DON'T BE SHY) TO E-MAIL, TELEPHONE, FAX, US MAIL EVERY LAME CONGRESS MEMBER WHO AIN'T CO-SPONSERED REP. BARBARA LEE'S RESOLUTION OF INQUIRY: H.RES. 375.

DO IT AGIN THE WEEKEND OF 24-26 SEPTEMBER 2005!!! THERE AIN'T NO STATUE OF LIMITATIONS ON THE TYPE OF CRIMES BUSH HAS COMMITTED. As they say in the Marines: GUNG HO--PULL TOGETHER!

I'd do it for one reason. If my husband served in Viet Nam like John Kerry did, I would do it for the military men who are serving now and who died because Bush lied and his lies encouraged my husband to vote for the war. If I was Kerry, I'd encourage every military man to donate a little so they could be part of the campaign.
Do it. Go for it. If America sees the lies and the manipulation they can't pretend they didn't know.

I wonder if the papers would take an ad like this, or would they refuse to run it?

I've told my kids that when the big media boys realize they are losing readership and viewers they will start allowing the real news to come out. Money talks.

Kerry has sued Bush over the ads - are the courts packed?

The media would not run the ads.

We need a new station, or use the public access stations in each community to play a DVD.

ATTENTION CONGRESSIONAL DEMOCRATS. We know you know in your heart that what these people have done far exceeds the moral AND legal test for impeachment. So…. why won't you stand up and say so? Why won't you and your fellow Dems stand up and say what we all know to be true?

You have a duty to the American people, yourself and humanity to GO TO THE MAT on this and to do it now. Shut down the governments business if that's what you have to do to move this forward and pound it into the American mind. Use whatever guerilla parliamentary procedure is available to you. Say nothing else until the GOP agrees to investigate, what any sane and just mind considers horrific crimes. No legislation, no issue, nothing you can personally gain or lose is more important than this. Nothing is more important than cutting this cancer from our government. Our safety depends on it.

Mountains of evidence show that these people are war criminals and traitors. You must stop them before they take us to war again, before they sell out our national security again. They have no right to do what they are doing. It is your right and your duty to stop them. Only you and your fellow elected congressional Democrats can get this done. And this is why the people elected you.

Stand shoulder to shoulder, stand tall. Say what you believe, say it loud, say it all the time: they have committed impeachable offences. And I promise you, in the end, not only will you know you've done the right thing, but politically you'll come out on top. The American people will come to know traitors and criminals in their midst if you show them often enough what they look like. And in the end they will be grateful.

Senator Rockefeller, if you let Pat Roberts go back on his word to investigate the administrations use of intelligence history will never forgive you. History will hunt you down and punish you to the very same degree as those who have committed these despicable acts. Where are you? What could be more important than ensuring our leaders don’t twist intelligence to make fraudulent cases for war? As a member of the United States Senate you have the power to make sure this goes forward. You will have to put it on the line to be sure, but this is the right thing to do.

Congressman Rangel, that was a very nice press release regarding all the killing in Iraq and when will stop. Thank you for your words. Since you penned them 10 more young, impressionable (presumably disadvantaged) Americans have died in Iraq. Words are no longer enough. Our country needs action.

Congressman Waxman, thank you for all your letters to the administration and the GOP leadership. You have shown you know right from wrong. But you have done little else. They are not listening. They don’t care. They have nothing but contempt not only for you, but for much of what America is supposed to be about. Your letters have proved to be inadequate.

Senator Kerry... anybody home?

You all owe your constituents a course of action that is effective. At this point it is clear the intransigence of this administration and the GOP leadership knows no bounds. And thus it is clear that NOTHING you will do any good at all, short of standing with your fellow Democrats and doing whatever possible to shut-it-all-down until open, good faith, adequately funded and staffed congressional investigations are underway. America deserves nothing less. America as we know it depends on your actions in the next weeks and months. God speed…

while he was at it.

the guy is literally fawning over a cheap kennedy wannabe

Read much? It was a letter to Theresa Heinz...not Kerry, and cheap Kennedy wannabe or not, the author has a point. A lot of these people who were very prominent prior to the election have gone back into hiding. It's wrong and they should be out there fighting still with the new information that is available and reminding people what's at stake. Where's Richard Clarke??? Doesn't he care anymore? Where is O'Neill??? Why aren't they on the news making their points? Big names are needed to attract the MSM.

With intellegent comments like that you're definately a neoCON troll!

The talking heads...Pat Buchannan, Fund, Joe Scarborough etc openly took pride in the smear campaign against Kerry.... The Kerry campaign never disagreed the premise for the need to take on Iraq...although no one has yet to tell us the real reason, it was of the utmost importance for the elite to agree this needed to be done. The Clintons are in the Bush camp as well...So, why would Theresa even consider an ad for the Downing Street Memos? Daniel Fearn is right...this is grunt work...we have to write the letters and stand up for each other...the elites are too busy protecting their positions of power. How do you think they got there?

Joe Wilson, Sibel Edmonds (read Vanity Fair), Valerie Plame, Ray McGovern, Scott Ritter, Jon Conyers, David Swanson and the many other heroes deserve the accolades and our support. The elites will only give immunity to each other...

There was only one member of Congress that was willing to come out publicly and fight the warmongers befor the war...that was Dennis Kucinich...he stood the ground against Richard Perle on the Phil Donohue Show.

Now, Hillary wants us all to forget everything and join hands in the Democratic party and support her platform.

No, we have to fight the fight ourselves. We have to choose how to live...according to our principles of our founding fathers or we will live in fear. Forget the elitists of both political parties...it is just part of the game for them. Some win, Some lose...but they sure cover each others backside... The problems we have today began 25 years ago...and none of the powerbrokers have done a thing to stop it.
So why would they now?

We don't want compromise of bad policies....we want new policies that don't have blowback in 20 years.

Justice for the lives of our soldiers, justice for the Iraqis, the Afgans and anyone else that has had to suffer because of bad elitist policies... We don't need solidarity with the elitists but with others that are paying the price in blood and treasure...they are our buddies in arms. For too long the apples on the bottom of the tree have been silent...I am amazed at what is now being accomplished from the bottom with no help from the top...

We can do it. Thank you afterdowningstreet.org

some good points - thanks
especially on kerry and hillary

You know, Dennis wasn't alone in opposing the war, but he was a leader in organizing two thirds of the Dems in the house to vote against it and against their own party's "leadership." And where is that leadership now? Dean is supporting the war, even while taking credit for an impressive house race in Ohio that was driven by opposition to the war. Amazing.

"Too late..."

Too late...NOT!

I can barely stop laughing at this ridiculous statement of yours! Let's try to piece the facts together so even people who hide behind "anonymous" while calling others spineless can understand!

John Kerry and Teresa Heinz Kerry were not spineless nor have they ever been spineless.

Election 2004--101

1. John Kerry and THK ran against the worst corporate partisan media the world has ever known, comparable to the communist world!

2. They fought for against the smears and thirty-second sound bites and whisper campaigns started by this corporate media.

3. They fought the corporate media who showed 10 seconds of Kerry, “Hi, Thank you for having me in _____

Newsflash: Add Iran Contra to the above.

We all lost a tremendous opportunity on November 2. Whatever you think of a person's personality--and the media had every reason to hide the adoring crowds that the Kerrys met at every stop--please understand that this is an honest man, who fights for the little guy. He always has. We lost an election, and we lost integrity in the White House as well.

I read something about his work to bring the facts out on the Iran Contra affair. Now that took courage. He was out there by himself I think. He saw something that didn't look right and he kept digging. Am I right?

kerry said through the primaries that he supported the war because he was lied to

in the general election he said he would still support it knowing everything he knows now

kerry ran away from the accomplishments of his past, especially his challenging of the viet nam war

kerry skipped campaigning to hunt ducks because macho was his whole platform

he opposed single-payer health care

he opposed ending nafta

he opposed ending the war and pentagon waste and directing resources into education

he offered no vision for the country

and, as you say, our horrible media beat the hell out of him

and, yet he still won, because of who he was up against and how smart people are -- or, for the tenderhearted believers, let's say he almost won because of those factors

1. At the time of that statement, he still did not have PROOF like the DSM to prove Bush lied. AND AS IT'S been explained, repeatedly, he voted the way he did, and the way a person could reasonably do, because he did assumed the President would not lie and cause people to die for no reason. He had no reason to believe this president would make up facts. He gave the president a "tool" like a hammer, but he did not say, "Go forth and hammer away without providing saftey equipment for our soldiers and without a plan." In fact, quite the opposite--HE WARNED the President if he did this without a plan and without an exit strategy "THIS" would happen.

2. Ran away? Not likely...HE RAN IN THE PRESENT TENSE! THIS IS OUR SITUATION AND THIS IS HOW WE RECOVER!!!

3. Had no plan? Gee...I guess you never read the book? I guess it wasn't on your Fox news?

4. Hunting ducks? That's what you come up with? GEE, the last I knew there were Liberatarians out there who happen to believe hunting ducks is way cool. Hunting ducks! The next thing you're going to come up with is that he stopped to use the restroom too!

5. He opposed single-payer healthcare, but his plan was even better! It provided NATIONAL heathcare for a country who is in CRISIS! AND it provided tax benefits for businesses who used it. He provided the same quality as scum-bags like Bush/Cheney/ Rummy/ and Rove get.

6. Nafta--ah hah!!! Well, gee...slave labor overseas and giving really big tax breaks to the companies doing this--that's Georgie Bush. AND of course, some businesses have thrived thanks to Nafta and they've managed to be fair to their employees. HOWEVER, the reason we have this current situation is because the TERMS of the deal have not been abided by by businesses and BUSH has refused to make businesses stop the slave labor overseas. BUSH gives these people an extra tax break for their slave labor overseas; whereas Kerry would have given tax breaks to AMERICAN companies staying in AMERICA!!!

7. He opposed ending the war? REally? Gee...I thought he was going to end it within a year and train people in other countries and then get us the heck out of there! Sounds like you didn't pay attention to Kerry's comments!

8. No vision? Where can we purchase a new pair of prescription glasses for you? Oh..wait...that's the Republican corporate media spin ya' got goin' there! Duh!

And YES he still won, because Republicans had to CHEAT and throw away voter registrations, and suppress the vote, and tally in Warren County Ohio in the middle of the night without "election protectors".

So...Mr/Miss Anon...turn off the fox news and get with the program!

It's dangerous out these days, and the closer you are to the bottom, the more dangerous life is for you. Posting anonymously here is not an indication of cowardice. For me, it's a convenience.

I post anonymously here because I am usually intent on saying what I have to say, but when I write to my Republican Senator and Representative, I state my name, address and telephone number, so they know where to find me. I think that's true for others here as well. Many people have spoken in this forum who have never participated in a forum of this sort in their lives. Shyness and uncertainty as to how to go on in this venue is not cowardice and I think it was in poor taste for you to say that. Apparently, you have no idea how desperate people are to see this bastard and his whole cabal impeached. Many of these comments are brainstorming to try to come up with ideas that would help towards this end. Perhaps Kerry and Heinz are fighting as hard as you say they are, but how would we know it? About the only source of truth that we have is out here in cyberspace, and we have to wade through masses of stuff just to find sources we can depend on. So, please...don't take these comments as attacks, but for what they are...pleas for truth from people who are better placed than most of us to pursue it.

couldn't agree more

impeach impeach

Submitted by Lindy (not verified) on Fri, 2005-08-05 00:10.

Ah...so they want to impeach or hold the Bush regime accountable and they do it by anonymously smearing Kerry and Teresa?

No..sorry I don't buy it. Not at all.

Besides, the post I responded to was different and my comment was direct SOLELY at that post (specifically) which is why I "time stamped" and included the specific first words from that person's post.

But let's look at that person's post, specifically:

First, if they were intent on impeaching Bush why was the message REDIRECTED away from the Bush crimes and instead directed towards the people who the person was asking to help?

Next, if the post is against Bush and there is definately reason to fear having your name out there, then posting as ANON is ok--afterall, we all know, Bush and his Republican krownies want to sent anyone to Gigmo or to Iraq. Besides, wasn't it Republicans who tried to sneak a peak into peoples' tax returns without due cause, in the Omnibus bill (the same one Kerry and the most dems voted NO against?) Therefore I can understand the fear at telling the TRUTH about Republicans, their corruption, and telling the world about the Bushco CRIMES OF THE CENTURY while using your own name. (as you described in your post. This is indeed understandable.)

So I will not apologize for telling people who write smear posts to at least show the courage to write under their own name. Bashing is just a teenage smear campaign; whereas, legitimate concerns against the corruption in the Bush/Cheney/Republican party is different.

The most important thing is to get rid of those criminals who live and work in our offices. If we get sidetracked by other things, our outrage quotient flatlines. That's the most important thing. Get them out! We can pick up the pieces after. The exit strategy can be handled by the politicians (hopefully a whole new bunch with ethics).

Kerry and his ilk have always stood for a policy of continuing the policy of American empire. Take Paul Hackett (please!), the fellow who just lost in Ohio, who said on Democracy Now that he never thought the war was unjust, merely *mismanaged*. If that is the extent of the opposition, then no wonder, the anti-war movement sucks. We have to build a movement that seperates itself from such morally bankrupt position.

Tom,

Why don't you run for office then? Get your message out and run the campaign the way you want to. If you feel so strongly about what the message should be then you take it to your town USA.

I wish you well, sincerely. But please learn to bash your opponent instead of your teammates, because like it or not Kerry, Hackett, Boxer, Obama, Clinton (etc) are your teammates on the progressive side, not your opponents.

I have been emailing my Representatives (Republicans) about the downingstreet memo's and demanded that they support Rep. Lee's resolution. I have also emailed the media in my area (national and local) and "in my own words" told them that I was not to happy with their lack of reporting about the "memo's" and Rovegate. I will continue to do the same until the "dogs come home" if I have to. Please follow my suggestions for God only knows how long and how much damage will occur because of this administration. I think the outcry for Mrs. Heinze is a good one...I doubt that she reads these blogs but the point is quite clear...with all her money, why isn't she defending our cause?

I would implore Teresa Heinz Kerry to tell her husband to speak out about the Downing Street Memos and the rest of the lies relied upon by the Bush administration to start the Iraq war. Mrs. Heinz-Kerry should encourage her husband to join Representatives John Conyers and Barbara Lee in their Resolution of Inquiry as a first step to find out the truth and, if warranted, institute impeachment proceedings against Bush, Cheney and the rest of the neo-con civil officers like Rumsfeld, Rice etc. Senator kerry should also take the leasd in speaking for the majority of Americans who do not want a right wing ideologue as Justice O'Connors' successor. I received an e-mail from the Senator earlier this evening seeking contributions for the "fight". I am a regular contributor to the DNC and PA Dems but I can't contribute every week. However, I'm not afraid to add to the til for the cause, but I also want something in return. I, no, WE want action! Senator Kerry, Please, Please speak out in favor of the Resolution of Inquiry! We need you and the other high profile Democratic Seantors and Representatives to come out and force the hands of the main stream media. Call them to task for their blatant favoritism to Bush and the GOP. At least this will not be a lie for Bush and the media are the liars and the purveyors of folly. Read the AfterDowningStreet.org web site or have your staff review it back to its beginnings in late May, 2005. There is a wealth of material and resources to use to connect the dots. Come out and introduce the likes of Cindy Sheehan and Ray McGovern. Get up on the stump with Joe Wilson and force the main stream corporate media to cover you even if they denigrate you. As Jesus said, rejoice if they call you names and insult you for truth's sake, the result you and the rest of us will obtain is a free, democratic nation to be proud of again. That pride is missing in action as a result of Bush

It is a great idea. The war criminals could be taken down but courage is something unknown to politicians. We must strike fear into their lily-livered hearts. Ms. Heinz Kerry help us with you millions of dollars and we will do the job.

The ad campaign is a great idea, if she'll go for it. Teresa herself was one of the reasons for Kerry's "defeat". She never appeared well dressed or neatly coiffed except on the podium of the Convention. It matters a great deal what a politician's wife looks like and how she greets the public. Laura has very high ratings for a reason. Howard Dean's wife never appeared in public and when she did, she didn't help him at all for the same reasons as Teresa. These so called superficial grooming and speech making ability of spouses cannot be underestimated the next time around for Democrats.

Funny...I always thought Teresa appeared sincere, loving, and warm!
I disagree with your comments. Teresa did not look the way you describe her.

I guess it's because I look at the honesty and warmth, the heart of a person, and not just at a pretty well-coiffed fake smile.

Besides, let the woman be true to herself. Keep the heat on the politicians not on their kin.

It's just plain wrong to pick on Teresa this way!

While I have never met Teresa Heinz, I was greatly impressed with
the way she handled herself during the election. I felt she was
"REAL", a truly self-actualized modern woman in the tradition of
Simone de Beauvoir and Mary Wollstonecraft.

I always feel sorry for women like Laura Bush that have been forced
into some facade of the "Trophy Wife" and "Model of Goodness" by
their dysfunctional male fathers & mates that haven't quite accepted the beautiful triune nature of the feminine (maiden, mother, crone).

Teresa Heinz - Definite UPGRADE!!! (VH1 Best Week Ever thang)

peace.

I have met her, and she is funny, smart, and she looks right at you--and she listens (I cannot say that about many of the people in the campaign).

The campaign was a grueling schedule and BOTH JK and THK had the most grueling jobs of all.

They did their jobs with grace and aplomb. And had they been making the move on January 20, we would be in a state of grace we can only imagine.

For those who feel the need to criticize her, I submit the following speech:

http://www.hfp.heinz.org/aboutus/albert_schweitzer.html

Please read it and consider what we missed out on here.

What are you thinking? People should be elected based on merit....I think that is one problem with politics and probably the reason Bush got re-elected. Kerry just wasn't handsome enough (????). It's not hollywood. It's your future.

I wrote the above and can answer that people who were on the campaign trail with her said she was totally demanding, stubborn and impossible, perhaps befitting her millionaire, unearned status. Furthermore, anyone who thinks being temperamental equates to intellect lives in sitcomland. Teresa was so poorly dressed and so sloppily coiffed, I used to call the DNC to send a hairdresser around with her. The response was she there wasn't much they could do with her as she was so stubborn.

Hmmm...I heard that too...from the corporate media! And the backlashing to blame her instead of looking at their own actions is irresponsible to everyone one of us out here trying to get people elected for their ideas and their integrity.

Still...heard it or not..it's a rumor and it's a coldhearted evil thing to say about anyone!

Even the republicans never bad mouthed Nancy Reagon who had a terrible reputation herself.

The left will never take office again while we allow the wifes to be attacked and the kids. It shows we eat our own.
