1) WHY WE SAY STOP BOMBING LIBYA NOW

A packed special meeting of the Stop the War national steering
committee last Saturday brought delegates from across the country
and from affiliated organisations to discuss the issues arising
from the attack on Libya and wider issues of the "war on terror".

The statement last week signed by Cameron, Obama and Sarkozy made
it clear that this is now a war of regime-change, which is
neither sanctioned by the UN resolution nor legal under
international law.

How the anti-war movement should respond to the new phase of the
Libyan war was addressed by Andrew Murray, national chair of Stop
the War, in his introduction to the discussion. His speech, which
gives a clear analysis of how the Libyan conflict has developed,
and the balance of forces involved, is available on the Stop the
War website, here: http://bit.ly/gaI3Wl

The meeting reasserted Stop the War's opposition to Western
intervention and agreed on a statement which outlines why we say
the bombing of Libya must stop now. The statement is available on
the website: here: http://bit.ly/i7TUR2

An action plan agreed by the meeting included:

* Organising a public rally involving the trade unions, following
the statements calling for the end to the bombing by Unite and
Unison -- the two biggest unions in Britain.

* Organising a protest when Barack Obama is here for a state
visit on 26-28 May.

* Organising a public meeting in parliament. Five MPs have called
for parliament to be recalled following the change of mission in
Libya to regime-change, an indication of the unease MPs are
beginning to feel about where the war is leading.

* We are encouraging all local Stop the War groups to organise
actions and public rallies about Libya. Some groups who have
already organised meetings on Libya say they were the biggest
they have had for years

2) LONDON LIBYA PROTEST: 19 APRIL

STOP THE BOMBING OF LIBYA NOW
TUESDAY 19 APRIL 5PM
DOWNING STREET LONDON

David Cameron has been leading the charge for military
intervention in Libya and, alongside Obama and Sarkozy, has
dragged the Western powers into the third war against a Muslim
country in the past ten years.

In the light of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars , the danger of a
long war with Libya that can only bring more misery to its
people, is obvious. Public opinion in Britain and the USA is very
strongly opposed to this latest episode of warmongering.

Stop the War has called a protest on Tuesday 19 April, 5pm, at
Downing Street calling for the bombing to stop now. If you are in
or near London please join the protest and spread the word as
widely as you can.

3) CONFRONTING ANTI MUSLIM HATRED IN BRITAIN AND EUROPE

CONFERENCE: SATURDAY 21 MAY: 11 AM - 6PM
LONDON MUSLIM CENTRE, WHITECHAPEL ROAD,
LONDON E1 1JX

A conference opposing Islamophobia has been called against the
background of the inflammatory attacks on Muslims by David
Cameron and Britain's tabloid media, the banning of the full veil
in France and the increasing support for anti-Muslim politicians
in Europe.

Community figures, campaigners, academics, experts and victims of
Islamophobia from across Europe will discuss the effects of
anti-Muslim hatred in Britain and across the world and how to
campaign against it.

Speakers at the conference include Professor John Esposito (USA),
Mehdi Hassan (New Statesman political editor, Seumas Milne (The
Guardian), Salma Yaqoob Respect Party), Tony Benn, Lindsey German
(Stop the War) and activists from France, Germany and the United
States. Full list of speakers here: http://bit.ly/f43fUZ

The conference will aim to launch a campaign of action against
the new racism. The event is free but please register to book
your place at info@enoughcoalition.org.uk

4) CONFERENCE: AFGHANISTAN AND THE WAR ON TERROR

SATURDAY 11 JUNE CONWAY HALL,
RED LION SQUARE LONDON WC14RL

Afghanistan has been largely dropped by the media, but the
carnage goes on. Opposition to the occupation is growing. Even
such avid supporters of military intervention as David Milliband
are admitting that the military option has failed.

This day conference will highlight the disasters of the Afghan
war, put it in the context of wider imperialist intervention and
discuss the next steps in the campaign to get the troops home.

Speakers include Tariq Ali, George Galloway, Joan Humphries,
Pankaj Mishra and Tony Benn.

Admission £5 please book in advance by e-mailing
office@stopwar.org.uk or phoning 020 7801 2768.
