1) WHAT LINKS THE UK RIOTS TO THE WAR IN AFGHANISTAN?

It in no way justifies or excuses the rioting witnessed in London
this week to say that some forms of thuggery, theft and
criminality seem more worthy of condemnation than others.

It's hard to imagine that David Cameron would condemn the
devastation and mass slaughter visited on Afghanistan and Iraq
over the past decade -- or the bombing of Libya -- as "sickening
violence".

Many of the same MPs who voted along with the majority in
Parliament for the war that reduced much of Iraq to ruins and
killed a million Iraqis, take to the moral high ground when
alienated youths from our ghettoes of deprivation commit their
mini-version of "shock and awe".

And which of the politicians now demanding that the London rioters must be subjected to "the full weight of the law" has said the same of Tony Blair, guilty of international war crimes, in the lies and deceptions he used to take Britain into an illegal war? (READ THIS ARTICLE IN FULL, HERE: http://bit.ly/nqwwge) ************************************ 2) HUGE RISE IN WAR DEATHS IN AFGHANISTAN AND LIBYA Submerged under the news on the riots and the collapsing world economy are the reports of dramatic increases in the killing rate of the wars in Afghanistan and Libya. Most dramatic for the western forces was the shooting down last weekend of a US helicopter with 30 American troops killed and eight Afghan collaborators. Barely reported, a British soldier died the same weekend, bringing the total to 378. Since then another five Americans have been killed, bringing the total so far in August for the invading armies to over 50, with the likelihood that this will be worst month for casualties since the war started in 2001. In Libya, the United Nations mandate for a no-fly zone to "protect civilians" has become a NATO free-fire zone that is killing them in increasing numbers. 85 were killed in a recent air strike, most of them women and children, and even tame news agencies like CNN had to show evidence contradicting NATO's claim that they were all "insurgents". By the end of the week, both Amnesty International and the United Nations were calling for an inquiry. (SEE http://bit.ly/mZUdvl ) ************************************ 3) BIGGEST TRADE UNIONS PLEDGE TO JOIN ANTIWAR ASSEMBLY Around 1,500 people have already pledged to be at the Antiwar Mass Assembly in Trafalgar Square on 8 October, including two of Britain's biggest trade unions, UNITE and PCS. Len McCluskey, general secretary of UNITE, has also pledged personally. (YOU CAN PLEDGE HERE: http://bit.ly/o10L6p ) Among well-known figures who have recently pledged to be there -- joining John Pilger, Billy Bragg, Jemima Khan, Tony Benn and many more -- are comedian and author Mark Steel, actor/director Mark Rylance, Owen Jones -- the author of much praised book Chavs -- and Red Pepper editor Hilary Wainwright. We have begun posting a range of Why I Will Be There videos, including from actor Roger Lloyd Pack, CND's Kate Hudson, War On Want's John Hilary and Jeremy Corbyn MP. (SEE http://bit.ly/nvjwaB ) If you have already pledged to be there, send us your reasons (with a photo, if you like) and we will publish the quote on the dedicated web page we have set up, here: http://bit.ly/o1H8W4 Stop the War has organised hundreds of events since it was founded in 2001, including some of the biggest demonstrations ever seen in Britain, but the Antiwar Mass Assembly, on the tenth anniversary of the start of the Afghanistan war and the 'war on terror', is one of the most important. IF YOU HAVEN'T PLEDGED TO BE IN TRAFALGAR SQUARE ON 8 OCTOBER, DO IT NOW: http://bit.ly/o10L6p The Antiwar Mass Assembly has been called by Stop the War Coalition, CND and British Muslim Initiative, and is supported by War On Want, UNITE the Union, the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), and the Palestine Solidarity Campaign. ************************************ 4) WRITE TO MICHAEL LYONS JAILED FOR SAYING NO TO WAR Supporters of Royal Navy medic Michael Lyons gathered in solidarity a week ago outside the military prison in Colchester where he is serving a seven months' sentence for refusing to undertake rifle training because he believes the war in Afghanistan is wrong. (SEE: http://bit.ly/nL9tBT) Like ex-soldiers Joe Glenton, Ben Griffin and Malcom Kendall-Smith, whose consciences made them refuse to wage unjustified wars in foreign lands, Michael deserves the widest support from the anti-war movement. You can write to him here: Michael Lyons: 236 Lyons D Company MCTC Berechurch Hall Road Colchester CO2 9NU. Michael's wife Lillian will be attending the Antiwar Mass Assembly in Trafalgar Square on 8 October. ************************************ 5) LOCAL DAY OF ANTI-WAR ACTION: 20 AUGUST Local Stop the War Groups are organising a day of action on Saturday 20 August, calling for all British troops to come home from Afghanistan now, and mobilising support for the 8 October Antiwar Mass Assembly in Trafalgar Square. Details of local events will be posted here: http://bit.ly/qrKPEM If you would like to get involved in your area, contact Stop the War national office: office@stopwar.org.uk tel: 020 7801 2768 ************************************ 6) UPCOMING NATIONAL EVENTS SATURDAY 3 SEPTEMBER LONDON: National Demonstration - Racist English Defence League not welcome in East London http://bit.ly/rhqPPZ TUESDAY 13 SEPTEMBER LONDON: Demonstration: Cut the arms trade not public services.
