Sam's Ride for Peace - Day 1

DAY 1; Sunday, April 29 at the State Capital in Raleigh

Sam Winstead led a team of 7 bicyclists riding north from the Capital to the cheers and applause of dozens of supporters who had turned out to witness the launch of Sam’s Ride for Peace, a 7 day, 360 mile journey from NC to DC.  The 86 year old retired Person County farmer and WW II Marine combat veteran is leading the ride to Washington DC to declare to our national leaders that it is time to end the wars.

Riding with Sam was his grandson Billy Janke, great grandson Aidan Janke, Cousin Joe Winstead, Viet Nam veteran David Preston, Carol Lawrence and Fred Mauney.  Vehicle drivers Wally Ewalt, Bert Gurganus and Ted Zeller were on hand to lend support; Yanceyville’s Gilbert Anderson (North Road Bicycle Imports) charted the 1st day’s course.

Army Reservist grandson Sam Winstead III was among the well wishers who turned out for the 8:00am send-off, which included members of Sam’s family and the Eisenhower Chapter of Veterans For Peace.  Young Sam will be deployed to Afghanistan next Saturday in what will be his 3rd tour in Iraq and Afghanistan.  It was a letter sent to his grandfather from young Sam, who was serving in Iraq, which provoked Sam Sr. to make a strong statement for peace.

David Irvine, staff writer for the Henderson Times Dispatch had a fine article about Sam published today (Sunday) front page top center which led to good conversation around Henderson, including a substantial discount at the Scottish Inn and a free dinner for Sam at the 220 Seafood Restaurant.

Billy, Aidan, David and Carol will have to drop off the Ride for Peace in order to return to work and school responsibilities.  But Sam, Joe and Fred will continue the ride, with Blackstone, VA as the destination for Monday, a ride of 65 miles.  More cyclers have signed up to join the ride as Sam and his team approach Washington DC for the Ride for Peace Rally, 2:00pm Saturday May 5th at Lafayette Park.
