Rules of Thumb for the Age of Doom

By Charles M. Young

Anyone who claims that if you don’t know your history, you are doomed to relive it, is boring.

Anyone who claims that you are entitled to your own opinion but not your own facts is boring.

“Anyone dumb enough to wanna be in the military should be allowed in,” said the late great Bill Hicks. It was one of the few things he got wrong. Anyone dumb enough to wanna be in the military is too dumb to be trusted with a weapon. So the issue of getting gays into the military is not the issue. The issue is getting heterosexuals out of the military. They’re the ones who are shooting civilians for sport and taking trophies. Anyone who gets jazzed about equal rights for war criminals is boring.

As the Huffington Post gets bigger and bigger, it gets harder and harder to find the stuff that’s worth reading, unless you’re actually interested that Kim Kardashian bought a purse for $30,000.

Most men in the United States know they don’t have a chance with Kim Kardashian and they resent it. The fundamental problem here is class, not sexism...

"Anyone who gets jazzed about equal rights for war criminals is boring."

They equally have the right to be indicted, prosecuted, convicted, sentenced for, well, if they're leaders of wars of aggression, then the rest of their earthly lives. And we could get jazzed up about that, if we could make it happen and did. We'd be so jazzed up that there'd surely be celebrations and joy worldwide.

We painfully can't make that happen, and there's nothing jazzy about this at all.

"The Top Censored Stories From 2009-2010"

by Project Censored,, Oct. 11th, 2010

Some stories that seem like they're news to me and some that are news to me are the following.

"4. ICE Operates Secret Detention and Courts"

"8. Massacre in Peruvian Amazon over US Free Trade Agreement"

"16. US Presidents Charged with Crimes Against Humanity as Universal Jurisdiction Dies in Spain"

"17. Nanotech Particles Pose Serious DNA Risks to Humans and the Environment"

"18. The True Cost of Chevron"

"19. Obama Administration Assures World Bank and International Monetary Fund a Free Reign of Abuse"

"22. 1.2 Billion People in India to be Given Biometric ID Cards"

"24. War Crimes of General Stanley McChrystal"

I'll highlight two of the above stories, and not because they're necessarily more important than the other stories listed above, or in the full list of 25 stories.

No. 16 has the following three articles.

*) Glen Ford, “Four U.S. Presidents and Four UK Prime Ministers Charged With Genocide,” Black Agenda Report, October 13, 2009

*) “Justice for Iraq: Legal Case Filed U.S. Presidents and UK Prime Ministers,” Brussels Tribune, October 7, 2009"

*) Center for Constitutional Rights, “CCR Seeks to Intervene in Spanish Court’s Investigations into Bush Administration’s Torture Program,” press release, April 27, 2010

No. 24 has the following two (of three) articles.

*) Seymour Hersh, “Secret US Forces Carried Out Assassinations in a Dozen Countries, Including in Latin America,” Democracy Now!, March 31, 2009

*) PressTV, “McChrystal Was Cheney’s Chief Assassin,” May 16, 2009

I had read that General McChrystal had an assassination kind of military background, but don't think to have read about him having been "Cheney's chief assassin". And I knew that the U.S. carried out assassinations, but don't recall having read that it's in a dozen countries.
