1) NO TO NATO: PROTEST MAY 19

Protest: Troops out of Afghanistan - Don't Attack Iran - No intervention in the
Middle East

1pm, May 19, US embassy, Grosvenor Square, London WC1

Stop the War and CND has called this protest to support the US movement and to
demand an end to NATO's disastrous policies. Thousands of people will be
demonstrating in Chicago on the weekend of May 19/20 as NATO officials gather
for a crucial conference.

Military action against Iran will be high on NATO's agenda. New big power
negotiations with Iran show that popular concern about an attack is having an
impact. But still the right in the US and Israel favour an attack. For Israeli
Prime Minister Netanyahu, Iran is 'an existential threat'. The Republican
leadership in the US is unanimously in favour of 'tough action'.

Pressure for NATO military intervention in Syria is growing. NATO is
masquerading as a champion of democracy in Syria, despite the fact that NATO
countries are backing dictators across from Bahrein and Saudi to Yemen. The
West is already funding the opposition in Syria. Direct military intervention
will inflame the fighting; its only aim will be to increase the Western powers'
grip on the region.

The Afghan disaster will also be discussed in Chicago. Though the war is
clearly lost, occupying forces are set to stay in Afghanistan for at least two
more years. Keeping NATO troops in place will inevitably lead to more
atrocities and destruction and as ex diplomat Carne Ross argued recently, make
a negotiated peace much more difficult.
The threat of a further war is growing. Make sure you join the mass protest on
May 19th and spread the word. Leaflets are available from the office - please
organise to distribute them.

2) LONDON ACTIVISTS MEETING: MAY 10

We are holding an activists meeting in the run up to the protest to plan the
best ways to publicise the No to NATO protests and maximise the turn out.
Please make sure you can come and invite everyone in your group/network.

Thursday 10 May, 6.30pm, 52 Club, 52 Gower Street London WC1

3) STRENGTHEN STOP THE WAR: DONATE / BECOME A FRIEND

In the last two weeks Stop the War has raised £5,000 towards our £20,000
appeal. This is a great start. Please keep the donations rolling in. The money
goes directly towards our campaigning activity. Our ‘Who is threatening
who?’ poster showing how US bases surround Iran has been a big hit, but we
need to be able to produce as many leaflets and posters as people can
distribute. £150 buys us 500 posters plus postage and packing, £250 buys us
5,000 flyers including delivery. Please give generously.

We are also asking all our supporters to consider becoming a Friend of Stop the
War. By paying just £10 a month you ensure a free copy of our publications,
cut rates in to Stop the War events and free items of merchandise as well as
other benefits. Most importantly you help us increase our stable, monthly
income and so expand our operations.

To donate or become a Friend please go to our website here:

4) NO MISSILES IN EAST LONDON

There is a strengthening campaign against the plans to mount surface to air
missiles in residential areas around the Olympic site in East London. This
military presence in the city is unacceptable. Far from safeguarding Londoners
as they go about their daily lives, they will bring a real fear of accidents or
explosions and the prospect of these places becoming a target for terrorist
attack.

We are told by the government that the war in Afghanistan is being fought so
that we don’t have to fight on the streets of London. These plans give the
lie to that, and show that the war has made Britain a more dangerous place.

There is a No Missiles in East London Public Meeting on Friday May 4. Venue:
St. Paul’s Church, St. Stephens Road, London, E3 5JL (near Roman Road
market). Speakers include Brian Whelan (Bow Quarter Resident and Journalist),
Councillor Rania Kahn and Chris Nineham (local resident and Vice Chair, Stop
the War Coalition).--
