1) MESSAGE FROM AFGHANISTAN: END THE WAR NOW

The attack on British Council office in Kabul has forced to the
top of the news agendas -- recently dominated by the UK riots and
the collapsing world economy -- the war they cannot hide.

As the BBC correspondent reported, it shows that the Taliban and
other resistance forces can strike anywhere in Afghanistan,
disproving once again the mantra from Obama, Cameron and their
generals that the "insurgency" is being progressively defeated
and security and stability are returning to the country.

It was never more urgent that the voice of Britain's anti-war
majority raises its voice to say not one more death in our name:
bring the troops home now.

As Lindsey German, national convenor of Stop the War, says: " The
bomb which ripped through the British Council building in Kabul
came with a clear message: the troops must be withdrawn, and
Afghanistan must once again have independence from the British
and US empires." READ MORE: http://bit.ly/n9rsa4

We simply cannot allow the government to get away with spending
£5 billion a year on a war that is clearly lost -- and was never
justified -- while it is implementing cuts in public services
that will -- to give just one example -- make thousands of
disabled people homeless. (SEE http://bit.ly/mC6f9m)

This is why local Stop the War groups and activists across
Britain will on Saturday 20 August be holding an Afghanistan Day
of Action to collect pledges from people to be at the Anti-War
Mass Assembly in Trafalgar Square on 8 October. (SEE:
http://www.stopwar.org.uk/)

Recent pledges for 8 October include former UK ambassador to
Uzbekistan Craig Murray, Greg Muttitt, author of the acclaimed
book on Iraq, Fuel on the Fire, and Zita Holbourne, PCS union
national executive. (SEE FULL LIST OF PLEGES HERE:
http://bit.ly/pBlNMI)

If you haven't pledged yet to be in Trafalgar Square on October
8, we urge you to sign now. This is one of the most important
events Stop the War has organised in our ten year history, in
conjunction with CND and the British Muslim Initiative. (SIGN
HERE: http://bit.ly/o10L6p)

HOW YOU CAN HELP:
Download and print the October 8 Pledge Sheet for collecting
signatures in your community, workplace, trade union etc.

2) THE UK RIOTS AND UNJUSTIFIED WARS

Stop the War has posted a number of articles highlighting the
hypocrisy of politicians claiming the moral high ground over the
UK riots, when they are incriminated in waging illegal and
unjustified wars.

* The UK riots and the criminality of Jack Straw. SEE

* What 'twisted moral code' makes David Cameron send soldiers to
die in a lost war in Afghanistan? SEE http://bit.ly/mXXsnY

* Riots: If it's Baghdad it's 'political', if it's London it's
'mindless'. SEE http://bit.ly/o2LtSS

3) WE NEED YOUR HELP NOW: PLEASE DONATE

October 8 in Trafalgar Square is going to be an antiwar festival
of words, film, theatre and music, which will require screens,
stages, sound systems etc. We urgently need contributions from
our supporters to fund what is one of the most important events
in Stop the War's history. It will mark the tenth anniversary of
the war in Afghanistan which began at the same time as Stop the
War was founded to oppose the 'war on terror'. You can donate in
a number of ways:

* ONLINE: http://bit.ly/k0tBVk
* BY DEBIT/CREDIT CARD: 020 7801 2768
* BY POST: Make cheque payable to "Stop the War Coalition". Send
to:
Stop the WarCoalition, 231 Vauxhall Bridge Road, London SW1 1EH

* MONTHLY DIRECT DEBIT: The best way to support all of our work
in opposing the war policies of our government, is to take out a
monthly direct debit to become a Stop the War Coalition member:
PHONE 020 7801 2768.

4) THE REMARKABLE HETTY BOWER

Hetty Bower was born in 1905. Over a century later, she will be
in Trafalgar Square on 8 October for the Antiwar Mass Assembly,
just as she has marched on almost every Stop the War national
demonstration over the past ten years.

Hetty says that she plans to keep marching for peace as long as
her legs hold out or until our political leaders stop waging
unjustified and immoral wars in other people's countries.

For Pictures of Hetty on our protests, a video in which she takes
apart Tony Blair, and a photo of her wagging a finger at Ed
Miliband -- no doubt at his support for the wars in Afghanistan
and Libya -- SEE http://bit.ly/nMeF8y
