Hancock Drone Resisters Trial Starts Tuesday, November 1 in Syracuse, NY
By Carol Baum
Tuesday, November 1 marks the first day of the trial of the Hancock Drone Resisters, 38 people from throughout Central New York and beyond who converged on Syracuse, NY on April 22, 2011 to protest the piloting of hunter-killer Reaper drones at Hancock Air National Guard Base. They participated in a die-in at the main entrance, symbolizing the indiscriminate killing of civilians in Afghanistan and Pakistan by drones.
Hancock Air Base is becoming a major player in drone warfare. Pilots at Hancock fly drones over Afghanistan, drone maintenance technicians are trained there, and a training school for drone pilots and sensor operators has recently started.
The group is charged with two counts of disorderly conduct - obstructing vehicular or pedestrian traffic and refusing to comply with a lawful order of the police to disperse. The group does not believe that order to disperse was lawful. Syracuse drone resister Ed Kinane said, "We must stop the hunter/killer reaper drones piloted in our midst. It is the drones, rather than us, that should be on trial."
Court begins at 5 pm on Tuesday, November 1 at the Town of De Witt Courthouse There are support actions during the day:
The action was sponsored by the Upstate NY Coalition to Ground the Drones and End the Wars, a group consisting of activists from Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo, Ithaca, Rochester, Syracuse, Utica and other upstate New York Communities.
