Defund the Bangor Wharf to Nowhere
The U.S. Navy is planning to build a $715 million Second Explosives Handling Wharf at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor in Washington State. It is intended to handle the Trident nuclear armed missiles deployed on the eight ballistic missile submarines homeported there.
The Navy has not needed this second wharf for the past 30 years, but now claims it needs a second wharf to handle missile maintenance demands. Trident submarines at Bangor currently carry reduced numbers of nuclear warheads and U.S. treaty obligations call for continued reductions in nuclear weapons.
There is no reason to build a Second Explosives Handling Wharf. It is quite simply a make work project - the ultimate PORK! This unnecessary project would divert desperately needed funds from important social programs.
Put a stop to this wasteful project by removing its funding, and spend that money on useful programs like Head Start and treatment for soldiers with PTSD.
