Barbara Lee Introduces Legislation to Repeal the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force
Washington, DC - This week, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) introduced legislation to sunset and repeal Public Law 107-40, the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF), over a six month period.
On September 14, 2001, Congresswoman Lee was the only Member of Congress to vote against the 2001 AUMF.
"Nine years ago, I made the unpopular decision to vote against this authorization based on a fundamental belief that a blank check to wage war anywhere, at any time, and for any length does not serve the national security interests of the United States," said Congresswoman Lee.
"In reflecting on the rush-to-war in Afghanistan and President Bush's misguided war-of-choice in Iraq, my worst fears have unfortunately been realized.
"Over the last nine years this broad authorization of force has had far-reaching implications which shake the very foundations of our great nation and democracy.
"It has been used to justify warrantless surveillance and wiretapping activities, indefinite detention practices that fly in the face of our constitutional values, extrajudicial targeted-killing operations, and a policy of borderless and open-ended war that threatens to indefinitely extend U.S. military engagement around the world.
"It is time for Congress to reexamine, and ultimately repeal this flawed authorization.
"The alternative, to concede Congress's constitutional responsibilities and blindly accept the persistence of war without end, is unacceptable."

well, ah, hmmmm, I'm not sure what the best way to say this is, but there's a little difference between what she says and my full view.
While I wholly appreciated and appreciate that she took the great oppositional position that she did prior to the launch of the war on Afghanistan, and greatly appreciate learning about her present reinforcement of her 2001 statement, I really wish Americans would grow up in terms of referring to the USA as a "our great nation and democracy"; because that USA has [never] existed!
The GENOCIDE against the indigenous populations of North America [continues] to this day and forward, and absolutely no "great nation and democracy" could ever be responsible for this, but the U.S. and Canada both are; and Mexico, as well.
NO, absolutely no! We have never had a "great nation and democracy". And i hope readers understand what the word "continue(s)" means; because the genocide here does indeed [continue].
When people will agree to stop referring to western countries with such falsehoods, then we will have finally chosen to side against repeated, perpetual brainwashing. The day that that might potentially, hypothetically anyway, happen in some future time, well, it might eventually happen, possibly; but it clearly hasn't happened, yet.
We are colonialists and imperialists, internationally, clearly so; but we sure-as-hell-exists seem to love to forget about our national framework or reality(ies).
Even people like Barbara Lee illustrate that they have these brainwashed beliefs about the USA! It's not to say that she actually believes that bs, but she nevertheless repeats it.
Greatness has never existed in U.S. history, except for when some [individual] Americans greatly acted; and take note, hardly any of them ever mentioned a word about the continuing genocide against the indigenous Americans, who seem to be a group everyone loves to ignore, for some reason of sick convenience, or another reason of sick convenience.
It perhaps is as bad as it is for the Palestinians, except for the fact that the population of Palestine is concentrated in a much smaller geographical area, which, btw, is continually shrinking. That could explain why they get a lot of attention, which we definitely need to provide, but while the indigenous North Americans get little, to none. Meanwhile, both genocides continue; and both are [real] genocides.
And the great genocide in the Congo is also extremely ignored in the U.S. Ten million or more Congolese people have been genocided since the 1990s or around 1995, whatever the exact time period is. People can get the facts from Keith Harmon Snow, www.allthingspass.com. But what do Americans, Canadians, and so on, know about this extreme genocide, which is already huge and ongoing so that our mineral-pig corporations can profit while the real owners get nothing; well, except death and other forms of genocide? By far most of us know either [nothing] at all, or else extremely little, about what's been really going on in the Congo and what is presently going on there.
Humans have a tendency called selectiveness.
In the U.S. right now, we have activists of groups focused on many or several important issues that need to be corrected. Do we find anything in this about the continuing genocides of the indigenous populations of the U.S. and Canada, as well as Mexico, by any chance? I haven't read of anything of that sort being treated as a real issue by activists joining together, but it's a [real] and very serious issue, nevertheless.
It's "funny" how we love to ignore the evils we commit and contribute to being committed in our own back yards or in our localities or country. We seem to be very activist in terms of economics, not losing homes to foreclosures, the rights of people in Colombia, and so on, but I [never] hear or read about the continuing genocides against the indigenous populations of the U.S. and Canada in corporate and by far most "alternative" news media. Oh, I know of websites to use for resources for this information; but the continuing genocides of these people is clearly of no importance to most North Americans; and I am talking about [real] genocide.
It's the imperialist brainwashing, I guess, that's to blame. Human rights activists of the USA and Canada who don't provide serious focus on the continuing genocides here must surely be demonstrating that they are not completely unbrainwashed. They maintain the brainwashing that causes many of us to forget that the indigenous populations here even exist, let alone remembering that the treaties with them have never been lived up to, that they continue to be imperialistically and forcefully robbed of their homes, land, natural resources.
No, all of that too-proximate reality has to be forgotten. Otherwise, it would make us feel awfully uncomfortable and we like comfort.
The USA has [never] been great and has rarely ever been a real democracy. And when it was showing signs of being democratic, then the ruling imperialist elites saw to it that any real democracy that existed would not last for long. There were [moments] of some real democracy in U.S. history, but they were only moments.
Brainwashed and dumbed-down voters don't make a democracy, and these are evidently the kinds of voters we've mostly had. Some were so dumb that they pretended to be liberal and liberally pretended that lesser evil was the better choice without ever being able to prove that what they called lesser was really lesser. I prompted such so-called liberals who promoted Obama for President in 2008 to provide proof that he was a lesser evil and they never responded. We clearly agreed that he was of an evil sort, but we disagreed because they said he was of a lesser evil without being able to prove that he was really lesser. Sure, John McCain might have sometimes sounded sicker than Obama did, but this is not sufficient proof of Obama being really lesser, in evil. People, liberals anyway, like to fancy that evil is not intelligent, but evil is intelligent, cunning, and so on. I said that the basic point was that evil is evil and these bla bla bla liberals agreed, but couldn't provide any examples of Obama being a lesser evil, as they had claimed that he supposedly was.
Obama's not a lesser evil. Whether Obama, Clinton, or McCain became President didn't matter. All of them would do as directed by the top ruling imperialists anyway!
Watch the "Exorcist", if you want some head-twisting examples. It's certainly not worse than watching Washington.
Based on my verbosity, you might be able to see how messy all of this political crap is. Heh, it's full of crap.
And the same is true when people pretend that the U.S. has ever been great or a great democracy, or even a real democracy. Americans really need to grow up. The U.S. has never been great. And if the U.S. was ever a real democracy, than it was only momentary! I find it awfully stupid to refer to the U.S. as having ever been either; except for democracy. The reason for the exception is only because the U.S. Constitutionally is supposed to have a government that is for, of and by the people; but like Bush Jr said when he responded to a journalist who asked a question that was something like, "But what about the Constitution?" in early 2003, well, Bush Jr said that the Constitution is "just a piece of paper".
Fundamental, Constitutional U.S. law is "just a piece of paper"? Well, and first of all, it clearly is not how only Bush Jr thinks of it. It's clearly what the ruling elite[s] of the U.S. think of it; and, that, by connection, means how or what they think of us. And that is something we have proof of through their propaganda of deception, lies, which they flood us with through the "news" media they control.
Some guy, whose name I forget, purportedly interviewed Henry Kissinger and one question was about what he, HK, thought of soldiers. HK supposedly replied by saying that soldiers are just dumb animals to serve the dictats of the elites. Well, I don't know if this exchange ever really happened, or if HK ever answered this specific question; but one thing is clear and it's that treating us as if we're dumb animals clearly is what the top ruling elites do, or try to do (while clearly often succeeding). If not, then why all of the propaganda of deception that they flood us with through the "news" media they control?
They know that we're not all dumb-enough animals to even be fooled by propaganda of deception, but they evidently do realize that many citizens are fooled and, therefore, [dumb].
Barbara Lee speaks well and spoke GREATLY in Sept. 2001, but she has a little ways to go in order to be able to have a full understanding of the USA; or to be truthful about it, 100%. She should try to avoid corrupting her great words and thoughts with bogus descrptions of the USA.
There's [nothing] great about the USA and there has [never] been anything great about the USA. That [is] what we call [reality]!
So let's get with being [real]! Cut out the bs about the USA. It's never been great and isn't great. It surely never will be great, but it definitely needs to go through serious, major corrections and to improve, a lot. It's only one country among many others, so join humanity, or get the f*ck out of here, because you otherwise don't f*cking belong here!
Calling the USA great and democratic is a sick, extremely sick insult for the rest of this world! I will not insult [humanity] in any way, because humanity is "God's family on Earth". Unfortunately, we have violently sick and sickeningly violent members of this huge "family"; and we're responsible for many of these crimes.
But I otherwise love Barbara Lee's words.
Call it duality, if you wish.
