Insanity Surge

In Search of Peace
with Cindy Sheehan

Surge: a strong, wavelike, forward movement, rush, or sweep.
Escalate: To increase, enlarge, or intensify.

Bloody George, the lamest duck in US history is going to soon announce to the nation that he will be sending 21,500 more troops into Iraq, which some call a "surge," some call an escalation, and what I like to refer to as: Operation Increasing Cannon Fodder.

News from Havana

In Search of Peace with Cindy Sheehan

After a slightly hairy flight from Cancun, Mexico, to Havana, Cuba, Col. Ann Wright, Medea Benjamin, Adele Welty (Son, Timmy, was a firefighter who was killed in the line of duty on 9/11---and she is a member of 9-11 Families for Peaceful Tomorrows), Tiffany Burns and I arrived safely and got immediately down to business.

First of all, I have to say right away that the U.S. embargo of Cuba should end---it is antiquated and hypocritical. Cuba is a Communist country and the human rights issues may not be perfect, but China is a Communist country also, that has an atrocious record on human right's issues. Secondly, BushCo is committing egregious human rights violations right here on Cuban soil, also. Perhaps re-opening relations could shine a spotlight on human rights violations from Washington DC to Havana.

Hello, but First, This Protest

Excerpted from the New York Times

Down the hallway, Representative Rahm Emanuel of Illinois was starting to address another news media mob that had waited for him to emerge from a meeting of the House Democratic Caucus. Mr. Emanuel wished everyone a happy new year, apologized for being late and was promptly drowned out by a group of antiwar protesters, led by the ubiquitous Cindy Sheehan.

“De-escalate, investigate,” the group chanted. “Troops home now.”

Cindy Sheehan routs the Democrats

Cindy Sheehan, the "peace activist" who famously besieged President Bush at Prairie Chapel Ranch, yesterday routed the leaders of the new House Democratic majority from their press conference where they attempted to present their legislative agenda.

Chants of "de-escalate, investigate, troops home now," drowned out the new majority leaders, including Rep. Rahm Emanuel of Illinois, the chairman of the Democratic House Caucus.

BUSH MUST GO! Demonstration at Opening of Congress, 12 noon, Jan 4

'If War Crimes, Torture, and Crimes Against Humanity Are Not Reason to Impeach, What Is?'

WASHINGTON - January 3 - On January 4, people will demonstrate at the opening of Congress. Protesters from up and down the East Coast, some dressed in orange Guantanamo torture jumpsuits, will demand that Congress investigate and hold accountable the Bush administration for criminal liability, and that the House of Representatives immediately initiate Articles of Impeachment against Bush for "high crimes and misdemeanors."

A Mile of Flags

In Search of Peace

Gerald Ford is dead. Every time I get a chance to turn on the TV I am incessantly reminded of this fact.

His body is lying in state on the same structure that has held up every dead president’s body since Abraham Lincoln. His widow constantly has a military honor guard to support her, sometimes even physically. The flag draped coffin is never left alone: there is always a military presence there to guard and honor the body. We have seen Ford’s flag-draped coffin entering and exiting planes and cars. The tradition can be quite moving at times, but, to me, also quite frustrating and gut-wrenching.

I heard it in my Italian family, and in my Jewish family growing up in New York. And I've heard it in Los Angeles, or Hollywood as some would say, over the years that I've lived here. "Death comes in threes." "Watch," they'd say. "As soon as one famous person dies, two more will follow." And though I'm not superstitious, I must admit I've seen this "death comes in threes" often enough that it's really quite freaky... even scary.

Just this year (2006), Pulitzer-prize winning playwright Wendy Wasserstein and spiritual leader Coretta Scott King died on the same day, January 30th. The great feminist Betty Friedan died a mere five days later on February 4th.

Also this year (2006), actors Dennis Weaver and Don Knotts died on February 24th, and actor Darren McGavin died the next day on February 25th. Not only did they all die a day apart, but all their first names began with the letter "D." Oooh... doubly scary!

In 2005, singer/actor John Raitt, free-spirit/raconteur Hunter S. Thompson, and actress Sandra Dee all passed away on the very same day, February 20th.

It's Deja Vu all Over Again: 3000

Gerald Ford, an incompetent, never-elected past-president, is being memorialized by one of his good buddies, and close confidantes, Dastardly Dick, today. The execution of Saddam Hussein is being celebrated by a blood thirsty media and another never elected, execution-happy, incompetent president. Dozens, if not hundreds more innocent Iraqis were killed today and the 3000th soldier crossed the threshold from life into the next world, more than likely.

Peace Mom Aims to Ramp Up "Peace Surge" After Arrest Thursday

By Erin Quinn, Waco Tribune-Herald

Crawford - Minutes before the "Peace Mom" was arrested Thursday for blocking a road near President Bush's ranch, Cindy Sheehan said she plans to become more "confrontational" and that it's time to "ramp up" peace efforts.

"We're the only people that can stop Bush now," she said, standing with about 30 other peace protesters at a barricaded Secret Service checkpoint outside the Crawford-area ranch.

Sheehan arrested outside Bush's ranch

Crawford, Texas (AP) -- Peace activist Cindy Sheehan and four other protesters [including Cindy's sister Dede] were arrested Thursday for blocking a road near President Bush's ranch, authorities said, snagging Vice President Dick Cheney's motorcade in the backup.

Sheehan and the others lay or sat in the road about 20 minutes and didn't heed requests to move, Texas Department of Public Safety Lt. R.T. King said.

Camp Casey Alert!: Help the Decider Decide!

President Bush has summoned his National Security Advisors to Crawford Texas this week to advise him about policy options in Iraq.

Activists are being asked to come to Crawford to remind Bush that Americans spoke loudly and clearly in the November mid term elections that Bush's Iraq war policy is unacceptable!

In our system of government the people make policy, not technocrats or bureaucrats! Come to Crawford and help the decider decide!

Gerald Ford, our 38th and first ever un-elected President is dead. All of the networks and cable news are rightfully filled with stories on his legacy and life. The pundits are analyzing his presidency and I have heard comments like: “great sense of humor,” “gentleman,” and “protector of the Constitution.” The first two, are nice, but not such urgent Presidential qualities, and really are objective traits. Being someone who protects the Constitution, as every president swears to do, but few (especially the current resident of the Oval Office) actually do, should be a mandatory item in every president's job description.

Yes We Can Can! If We Wanna Yes We Can Can!

Ever since Time Magazine declared "ME" Person of the Year, I've wondered what I could possibly have done to win so exalted a title. In the nearly eighty year history of Time Magazine's Person of the Year, the people or things selected have been chosen based on their great impact on the world. The choices have been far ranging. From Gandhi in 1930, to Hitler in 1938, to Endangered Earth in 1988.

But this year the selection is "ME" and the millions like "ME" who are active participants in Web 2.0. The bloggers, diarists, posters, viewers, digitizers, observers, surveyors, purveyors, etc., who share and snare information daily. Humorists, satirists, polemicists and poets. Brilliant enlightened points of view. Anger and angst. Harmony and hate. Everything's there in the blogosphere.

Bloody George

In Search of Peace
with Cindy Sheehan

As Christians all around the world are preparing to celebrate the birth of the “Prince of Peace,” Bloody George has been seeking what has been called “advice” on sending upwards of 30,000 more troops to Iraq , but what should more truly be called, “covering his hiney.” Bloody George is spending the birth of the Prince of Peace trying to discover, against all credible and moral opinion, how he can escalate the violence and killing in Iraq .

And so this is Christmas,
And what have you done?
Another year over,
A new one just begun.
(John Lennon)

Today is the 21st birthday of my youngest child, Janey. It is the 3rd birthday that she has “celebrated” since her oldest sibling, Casey was killed in Iraq. My other son, Andy, turned 21 the year Casey was killed. Carly, my oldest daughter, turned 24 the year after Casey was killed…the same age he was when BushCo sent him to die in their oil war for profit. In the one letter that Casey was writing 3 days before he was killed in the ambush that took the lives of six other soldiers, he expressed regret that he wouldn’t be home for Janey’s high school graduation that June. Little did we know, that he would be home, buried in his “final resting place” forever.

Walk for Change

In Search of Peace with Cindy Sheehan

As dissatisfaction with the occupation of Iraq soars and the carnage seemingly continues unabated, the new Democratic Congress is on board with staying the disastrous course that BushCo and the Republican dominated Congress set for our nation.

I watched a Democracy Now interview with new Ohio Senator, Sherrod Brown, who was the Congress-member who most consistently voted against George and his policies. When Amy Goodman asked him about voting “nay” to more funding for the war, he dodged the question and talked about his ambitious domestic program.

Trespassing for Peace

In Search of Peace with Cindy Sheehan

As the foreperson of our jury stood to read our verdicts in the NYC criminal court this morning, we Pink 4, also stood holding hands awaiting the jury’s decision. I looked back at the packed courtroom and many of our supporters (IVAW, VFP, Granny Peace Brigade, Code Pink, World Can’t Wait, and other peace activists), flashed up peace signs, and/or thumbs up. I smiled back. Whatever happened was going to be okay, I could feel the love, respect, and encouragement emanating from everyone who was present there; (Except the prosecutor and prosecutrix who were distinctly out-numbered and looked sheepish and a little nervous).

Iraq Protester Sheehan Cleared of Most NY Charges

By Jeanne King, Reuters

NEW YORK - Anti-war protester Cindy Sheehan and three co-defendants were found guilty of a minor violation and cleared of more serious charges on Monday for blocking the entrance to the U.S. mission to the United Nations during a protest in March.

The four women, who were fined and told to stay out of trouble with the law, said they would return to the New York City building to deliver a petition calling for an end to the Iraq war.

AP - Peace activist Cindy Sheehan and three other women were convicted of trespassing Monday for trying to delivery an anti-Iraq war petition to the U.S. Mission to the United Nations and refusing to leave. A Manhattan Criminal Court judge sentenced them immediately to conditional discharge, which means they could face some form of penalty if they are arrested in the next six months, and ordered them to pay $95 in court surcharges...

On Friday, December 8th, after 4 and ½ long days, the jury in the trial of the “Pink 4,” which includes me, Medea Benjamin, Gold Star Aunty Missy Beattie and Reverend Patty Ackerman, finally received our case for deliberation at about 2:30 PM. The judge summoned us back into the courtroom at 6:15 PM and we were excited for the verdict, only to learn that the jury had not yet reached their verdict and we would be staying in NYC until at least Monday when the jury would continue its deliberations on the 5 counts for each of us.

Little did I know, as Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-Oh) and I were driving through the streets of a Cleveland, Ohio, another American city that looks like it is preparing for the onslaught of a very cold winter on that gray morning, that he would be presenting me with a clear, reasonable, and obvious plan for bringing American troops out what is rapidly becoming total anarchy in Iraq.

Peace Mom Goes on Trial in Manhattan

By SAMUEL MAULL, Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) - Peace activist Cindy Sheehan, who protested the Iraq war by camping outside President Bush's Texas ranch, went on trial with three other women Tuesday on charges of trespassing at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations.

The women tried to deliver an anti-war petition with 70,000-plus signatures to mission officials on March 6.

Prosecutors said they were arrested after they sat down in front of the mission building, ignored police orders to leave and locked arms and legs to make it hard for police to move them.

(On the day John Bolton resigned, we four women who were arrested at the U.N. on March 6th went on trial here in NYC. We will be on trial this entire week. Our charges are resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration, and trespassing. The following is an article I wrote the day after our arrest.
Two leading neocons are out of government now and we must make sure that Rummy and Bolton are tried for war crimes and they are not allowed to go off and live comfortable civilian lives. The people whose lives they have ruined will never be comfortable again.
