Here are photos of members of "Gathering of Eagles" who assaulted gold star father Carlos Arredondo in broad daylight in Washington, D.C., on September 15, 2007, throwing him to the ground and kicking him.

Carlos Arredondo, 47 year old father of two sons, arrived in the nation's capitol on Monday, 09/10/07 to share a memorial he has made to honor for his eldest son, Alex. Carlos has visited thirty of the United States with the traveling memorial to his son Alexander. Lcpl. Alexander S. Arredondo, USMC was killed on 08/25/04. He was 20 years and 20 days old. The memorial consists of a casket, poster- size photographs of Alex when he graduated from boot camp, before his second tour in Iraq, lying in state at his wake, and a photo of Alex with his younger brother Brian.

Saturday, September 15, 2007 consisted of first a rally, a march towards the capitol and then a die-in. Carlos pulled the memorial along the march route approaching the rotunda near the capitol building. Several of the marchers requested for him to speak about the memorial where a crowd gathered around him. After finishing, several people walked with Carlos as he pulled the memorial. Several pictures of Alex dressed in his blues were attached to the display.

As Carlos passed counter protesters, one man ripped a picture of Alex from the memorial. Carlos leaped on the man to retrieve the picture. It was at that point that approximately five others all began to attack Carlos by kicking him in the head, legs, stomach and back.

The Capitol police bicycle patrol then appeared to break up the fight. Several officers including a female officer were engaged in breaking up the fight and were able to stop any further injuries from occurring. Hannah Jones who was walking with Carlos was also assaulted.

A bystander named Ramesh witnessed the whole encounter and also retrieved the picture of Alex for Carlos. He was quite distressed at how he watched the men follow Carlos as he pulled the memorial, purposefully yelling epiphets and eventually taking Alex's photograph. Soon, an ambulance showed up as well as many concerned activists. The paramedics provided first aid to Carlos but he did not seek further medical attention. Carlos sustained bloody cuts on his shins. He also reported bruises all over his torso and head where he was kicked.

You are dead wrong Benson, and a coward to boot. The minute these KKK freaks laid hands on a Marine Corps father they sealed their fate. We will personally see to it that they are charged, tried, convicted and sentenced.

Southeast Asia News has opened an investigation into this heinous crime by these jackbooted thugs. We are in the process of identifying and locating these traitors to America so that charges may be filed and are in contact with the DA. Federal charges of attempted murder and assault will also be sought.

Any assistance from the public in identifying these perpetrators will be greatly appreciated and used to prosecute. It is time for all Americans to confront these fascists, and assure that they are incarcerated for life.

First, what "tactic"? It was a demonstration. Both sides were free to attend, and did.

Second, how was this story "cherry-picked"? One man is demonstrating his anti-war views by pulling a coffin with a picture of his son on it. That is his right. His son's picture, his views, his right. [any cherry-picking yet? No? Okay, I'll continue.] Next, a man who holds an opposing view [also his right] walks up to the coffin and TAKES the other man's picture of his son. (That is called "stealing," btw.) [Any cherry picking there? Oh, you object to the word "stealing?" Okay, um, what would YOU call it?] Then, as shown in the PHOTOS, the man whose son's picture was taken is thrown to the ground and beaten. (that is called "assault," btw.)

I've been to a few GOE events. Some of the most enjoyable, humble, and down to earth folks I have EVER met. Do you know that there are actually people who get paid by the left to show up at events like these simply to start fights and to make a scene (that the leftest media will cover, no doubt)? The left has always used the tactic of provocation simply to play the role of "victim" to the camera. To answer your question, yes, the left would use the photo of ANYONE, dead or alive, if it served their purpose. In fact, I've seen people on these sites posing as soldiers, which I'm sure is an attempt to add more fuel to the leftest fire. But is incredible sad and disrespectful to anyone who has proudly worn a US Military uniform.

Well, even though they can not be able to be spotted in the posted pictures (but I haven't checked them all - wouldn't it be great to match them up for the world to see?), they were there in spirit at the very least.

How dare you call yourself Americans. You wallow in your own opinions, claiming to be the all knowing authority on a subject most of you commenting were not even within earshot of. I have read the comments posted before this one and it makes me sick to see so many insults thrown around - and not about the problem at hand but at someones mis-use of certain words or heaven forbid someone misspelled a word or two.

I am a member of a volunteer organization, mostly prior service members, who attend the funerals of our fallen brothers and sisters as a way of showing our respect. I have seen the protesters shouting profanity at the mourners, holding signs saying God is happy this person was killed and that he/she deserved to die. How would you feel if that was your son, daughter, Father, Mother, brother or sister?
Some of you are saying we don't need to be fighting in Iraq, fine. For you we should bring all of our troops home so you can be happy. Oh, one thing you might keep in mind - when we bring our troops home you can count on the war coming home too. The "bad guys" have attacked this country on more than one occasion and they will do it again, just as soon as we stop hunting them down and killing them in their backyard.
Ask any service member who has been over there fighting this war - of which I am one - and the biggest majority will tell you they would go back and fight again. Why do you think so many are re-enlisting and going over for a second or third tour? We believe in the cause and we fight for those who lost their lives in the cowardly attacks on this country and for our fallen brothers and sisters who fought for the same cause.

You quibble over who's side is right or wrong when in fact we should be banding together and supporting our troops. You people complain about how the government is being run but stop and think for a minute, it is being run by the people YOU elected. You might say, "I voted for the other guy" - who, John Kerry? Americans are never happy with the way the government is run because it is always different than what they think it should be. If this country would put as much time and energy into supporting the troops like Americans did during WWII we might have been able to end this thing the right way by now.

It is said that history repeats itself, if so then I see Korea and Vietnam coming back to bite us in the proverbial butts. Is this country made up of losers? NO! So lets stop arguing with ourselves and fight for the common good, not fighting over whose story about an altercation is correct. To be honest, the statements above sound like grade school bickering and cowardly name calling not statements by intelligent adults. Grow up!

You who say you are going to fight this incident to the fullest extent of the law - get real. Who is going to pay for this lengthy investigation? And the charge of "attempted murder"? Come on, try proving someone's life was in danger, it was at best a street fight with no weapons.

While the above detailed incident is at the very least regretable, the spin with which it is described is just short of fabrication in what it does not say. I was always taught that a half truth is the same as a lie, so lets see if you are willing to accept a few truths along with your "facts."

There is most certainly an argument that when an American flag is desecrated there are those who will respond in what many may consider an irrational way. Setting anything on flag is seen by many as the same type of disrespect that those on your side of the street show when you display it upside down, with corporate logos replacing the stars, being drug on the ground, spit on, set fire to and even being defecated upon! Doesn't make it right but it is what it is. I'm sure each of us has something that may well "push our buttons" to the point of violence. That of course assumes we are a normal human beings.

I make no excuses for the person that removed the picture from Mr Arredondo's memorial to his son. Was it the right thing to do? That question could and I'm sure will be debated to the point of becoming nauseating. What I will not let stand is the spin with which you folks have choosen to report this incident.

You fail to speak of the vile language coming from your people in the area of Mr Arredondo's memorial. I will not say that these taunting remarks came from this Gold Star Father himself, in as much as I do not know that to be a FACT. You fail to mention that Mr Arredondo attacked his offender from behind. And you fail to mention that it was a GoE member that laid his body over that of Mr Arredondo in an attempt to shield him from those you call thugs! Oh, the GoE member was bitten by Mr Arredondo for his efforts to protect him!

In your zeal to justifie your own actions and demonize ours, you turn a blind eye to the emotional stress you INTENTIONALLY placed at the feet of dozens of Blue & Gold Star parents who stand with GoE, our troops and their mission. Your little "die-in" was the ultimate show of disrespect for those who hate war more than you will ever be able to & have given more than most of you will ever be able to even comperhend. You carry signs that say "we support the murder of American Troops" and expect decent God fearing Nation loving Americans to stand by in silence.

You take what was little more than a school yard brawl and attempt to turn it into the beginning of a civil war yet you have still not condemmed the vanddalism done to the Viet Nam Wall which was no doubt perpatrated by one of your wanna be anarchists. You do not condem one of your own who was arrested for carrying an incendiary device into an area jam packed with children, most of whom were on your side, by the way.

All of the things above are reasons not excuses, but those on your side of the street bear a portion of blame. While I know you will never accept that another universal truth is that there are two sides to every story and the truth is generally somewhere in the middle.

In closing I will say that I truly wish I knew where your hate comes from. No one has yet been able to tell me what the blatant lie was that you want our country thrown into the trumoil of a presidential impeachment over. None of the arguements that, a very few of you are able to articulate, hold water with rational people. If it were about oil, we would have taken it by now. WMDs; many have in fact been found and according to a top general in Saddam's Fedayeen militia many more were shipped to Syria just days before the coalition attacks. But then again I suspect that a stockpile large enough to fill the Super Dome wouldn't satisfie most of you. And for those of you who truly believe this is about the "senseless deaths in Iraq" while I honestly respect you, I ask that you take a long hard look at the study done by Victor Hanson of Stanford Univ. comparing death and crime in Calif to those same numbers in Iraq. You may well be surprised. Where is your outrage for what is happening on the sunny left coast?

First, someone from the GoE group threw coin money at Carlos stating that he was "like the moneyhandlers" and cursing at him. Carlos kept silent speaking only to the woman next to him.

The culprit who took the picture of Carlos' son, Alex, (MIA 08/25/04, An Najaf, Iraq) was Fred Peterson who approached Carlos from behind to tear the picture off of the memorial which was securly fasted.

BTW, who is Fred Peterson? Frederick Peterson III is a Contributing Editor for Military Affairs and U.S. National Security to worldtribune.com. He is also a retired Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel and Vietnam/Desert Storm veteran. He appears frequently on Fox News as a national security expert commentator.

You fail to mention that Rory Peterson was holding Carlos by the throat in a strangle hold when Mr. Arredondo bit him in order to breathe.

Soapbox - Mr. Arredondo has attended countless funerals of those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. He visits Arlington to leave flowers for parents who live far from the national cemetary. He is a volunteer for the Veteran's Administration and American Red Cross. He has told me that what hurts him as Gold Star Dad is the thought all of those who have been killed including his son will be forgotten. This is why he was traveling with the memorial to his son. He knows countless blue and Gold star family members who painfully support his mission despite the tears that they feel when they see the display. Remember that GoE does not speak for everyone.

Mr. Arredondo did not participate in the die in for many of the reasons you cited. However, he never has used signs with profanity and does not condone this behavior by either side.

Respect for memorials is of the utmost concern for all of the Arredondo family members. They have been key in seeking the assistance of legislators and private donors to get Iraq and Afghanistan KIA with structures from Florida to Massachusetts.

There's an old saying my Dad would say, "We need a good war to shake up the economy." Those members of the GOP who have stocks in Halliburton, Blackwater or even McDonalds have to agree. Watch those prices rise! Here's another saying my Dad had, "If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, then..." So, if money is lost in Iraq, caches of arms are lost in Iraq, more troops are killed with the surge in Iraq, then...My guess is our conclusions would be different.

I just found this page and wanted to add my own comments to this story. I am the photographer who witnessed the assault and took the photos.

As a 12 year veteran of the Navy and a current employee of the Federal government.
I absolutely cannot understand why these men (the gathering of eagles) did what they did. Their logic is twisted. I come from a military family and I am proud to serve. I would never trample another person's rights to free speech, or assault them, even if I did not agree with their point of view. We are sworn to protect the United States Constitution, from all enemies, foreign and domestic. What I witnessed and photographed was a direct assault on Mr. Arredondo's beliefs, but also his right to free speech, guaranteed by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. It was sickening to me that they did this in the name of "patriotism."

The assailants attacked Mr. Arredondo without warning. After the police arrived and it was determined that he was a victim and not an instigator, I began to insist that the officers look at the photos. They did and in short order began taking statements. While taking my statement I noticed that the attackers were watching me closely and I began to fear for my safety. I ended up leaving the area escorted by the U.S. Capitol Police who were kind enough to walk me halfway home. Although I provided a detailed statement to the officers and asked them to contact me, no one from the police department has done so yet.

Mr. Arredondo did not participate in the die in for many of the reasons you
cited. However, he never has used signs with profanity and does not condone
this behavior by either side.

Respect for memorials is of the utmost concern for all of the Arredondo family
members. They have been key in seeking the assistance of legislators and
private donors to get Iraq and Afghanistan KIA with structure in both Hollywood,
Florida and Boston, Massachusetts.

All of the things above are reasons not excuses, but those on your side of the
street bear a portion of blame. While I know you will never accept that another
universal truth is that there are two sides to every story and the truth is
generally somewhere in the middle.

In closing I will say to you that Mr. Arredondo and even I are from the wrong
the side of the tracks. We met marching for peace in the inner city of Boston.
His grief is not just about his son but all of those young people killed before
their time for reasons that benefit many but not the people who live in Boston
or the citizens of Iraq or the US.

There's an old saying my Dad would say, "We need a good war to shake up the
economy." Those members of the GOP who have stocks in Halliburton, Blackwater
or even McDonalds have to agree. Watch those prices rise! Here's another
saying my Dad had, "If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, then..." So, if
money is lost in Iraq, caches of arms are lost in Iraq, more troops are killed
with the surge in Iraq, then...My guess is our conclusions would be different.
